Poker, but evil

The verdict

One game on this whole site got a ten. This is it.

10/10

We have given out exactly one ten in the entire life of this site, and Balatro is the game that earned it. That is not a number we throw around, so let me try to explain what happened.

It looks like video poker. You are dealt cards, you make poker hands, hands score points, you need to hit a target to survive the round. Simple. Then it introduces Jokers, little cards that sit above your hand and rewrite the rules, and the whole thing quietly turns into something else entirely.

Because the Jokers stack. One doubles your score for pairs. Another adds points for every heart. Another cares about the order you played your cards in. On their own they are small. Together, if you find the right few, they build a machine that spits out numbers so absurd the game's own counter struggles to show them, and you are the one who built it.

The high is not winning. The high is the moment you realise the busted engine you have been assembling is about to go off.

The only gripe

The single warning I have is that it is a genuine time sink, the deepest "one more run" hole we have ever fallen into. We wrote a whole piece about why this loop owns us a year before this came out, and Balatro reads like the final boss of that essay. If you loved Vampire Survivors, you already know the feeling. This is that feeling, refined into something close to perfect.

The site got a lot quieter not long after this released, and honestly, this is the game that ate the most of those quiet evenings. No regrets.
