About Red Hero Gaming
We are a small group of friends who could not stop talking about the games we were playing, so we made somewhere to write it all down.
Red Hero Gaming started at the beginning of 2021 as a group chat that had completely lost the plot about small games. Every night somebody would drop a link to something weird and wonderful, and by morning three of us had bought it and one of us had already finished it.
At some point the chat got too good to leave buried in a scroll history. So we started writing the reviews down, giving each game an honest score out of ten, and arguing every December about which small game had quietly been the best of the year. Then we started meeting up to play together, and the first community night turned out to be a lot bigger and a lot louder than any of us expected.
We never tried to be a big review site. We tried to be the group chat, written down and kept.
The pace slowed after a while, the way hobby projects do when life gets busier. We are quiet these days. But nothing here is going anywhere, and the inbox still gets read. If you are new, the reviews and the year-end lists are the best place to see what we were about.
How it went
- 2021
A group chat turns into a website. We write our first reviews and hold our first big December argument, which Inscryption wins.
- 2022
Our busiest year. Vampire Survivors eats everyone's spring, the first community night happens, and a small fox named Tunic takes game of the year.
- 2023
The reviews get louder and faster, Pizza Tower tops the list, and we finally write down why these games own us.
- 2024
One last obsession. Balatro earns the only ten we ever gave, and the evenings quietly get their own back.
The crew
Started the group chat that became this site. Will try to convince you that any game is secretly a roguelike. Wrote most of the reviews with the highest scores, which tells you something.
The reason we cover cozy games and JRPGs at all. Keeper of the softest opinions and the longest playtimes. Cried at Unpacking and is not ashamed.
Runs the reviews, edits the rough edges off everyone else, and drags the group toward anything horror-shaped or genuinely strange. Named the December argument 'the reckoning.'
Organised every community night, including the chaotic first one. Believes any game is better with forty people yelling at it, and has the evidence.
The completionist. If a game has a hidden ending, DriftMoth found it, mapped it, and made a spreadsheet. Our resident authority on anything with a map screen.
